I have teamed up with a wonderful team of bloggers who participate in “Five Minute Friday.” Here’s the skinny: Every Friday for nearly four years hundreds of people joined a kind of writing flash mob. We write for five minutes flat. All on the same prompt that is posted by the the team starting at 10pm EST on Thursday night and all through Friday. And we connect on Twitter with the hashtag #FMFParty (It stands for Five Minute Friday Party). No extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, or punctuation. Unscripted. Unedited. Real.

Today’s word: Depend.

Dependence is something that is passed down through family lines, blood lines, or a close community. As infants, we depend on others to help us survive and thrive. As toddlers, we test the boundaries and develop a false sense of dependence without realizing someone is always close by to watch our safety. As we age, it grows from testing the waters to full fledged independence. Fast forward to our adult years, as we move out, move on in marriage, create a family of our own, and have young life with now depends on us as we once did on those before us. Just like that, life comes full circle and there is an entirely new level of appreciation for those that came before us.

As I think back to the circle of life, and those that I depended on, as well as those that depend on me, I’m overwhelmed with emotion. Those that I depended on did everything just right, what if I can’t succeed in the same area?  Parenting is no joke, and certainly not for the faint of heart. My children depend on me, in good times and in bad. I can’t help but think that I am letting them down in certain moments. In times of chaos, I am not always their calm. In times of rushing, I am not always their peace. In times of emotion, I am not always their sanity. Yet they depend on me, and I cannot let them down.

For me, it is important to remember that each day is a new day. Where I failed yesterday, I get another chance today.

Who depends on you? Who do you depend on?

Please consider joining the Five Minute Friday community and today’s prompt: DEPEND.  All are welcome!
