Can We Stop With Evening Activities Already??

Dear World,

Can we all just agree that evening activities are AWFUL? I get it, my kid likes basketball…. I get it, my kid is good at gymnastics. I get it… Being on a team shapes a person and builds skills that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I still think it’s RIDICULOUS that we spend our nights carting kids around, doing kid swaps if you’re lucky enough to not fly solo, high-fiving family members court side while grabbing half your team to shuttle to the next destination, stuffing our faces with what we try to pass as “dinner” so we can get out the door faster. Enough, already. Enough.

As we cart our kids to and from activities, I look around and notice the rarity of parents actually WATCHING their children participate. Sure, we glance. We do the customary “thumbs up” with a smile from across the pool to let our tiny human know we are watching. But we aren’t. Not really. We’re responding to work emails, updating our resumes, and (let’s be honest) giving in to the ultimate time suck of Facebook.

Tonight, both in an effort to break this habit and quite frankly because I couldn’t even muster up the energy to pull my phone from my pocket, I watched. I sat in the parent section of the pool and I watched my kids swim.

It’s hard to put into words what I saw from my daughter’s side of the pool, but in regards to my middle child, I think I may need to ask for a refund 🙂

Love,
