The Questions I Ask My Kids Every Night… And Why

Between sports and activities, scouts and meetings, work requirements and family obligations, it seems that the moments we have in meaningful conversations are sometimes few and far between. Gone are the days where we come home from work and talk as a family while the newborn lays peacefully on my child. Gone are the days where we gather around the living room carpet and watch a toddler scoot and grunt. We have entered a new season of life and it is busy, and packed, and intense.  In the limited amount of time where we are together, I make it a...

Five Minute Friday:: Depend

I have teamed up with a wonderful team of bloggers who participate in “Five Minute Friday.” Here’s the skinny: Every Friday for nearly four years hundreds of people joined a kind of writing flash mob. We write for five minutes flat. All on the same prompt that is posted by the the team starting at 10pm EST on Thursday night and all through Friday. And we connect on Twitter with the hashtag #FMFParty (It stands for Five Minute Friday Party). No extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, or punctuation. Unscripted. Unedited. Real. Today’s word: Depend. Dependence is something that is passed down...

Mojitos & Munchkins Gives Back

Dear World, Thanks to a recent post by Eventbrite, I’m left reflecting on how I choose to give back and better this universe I live in. Charitable donations have always been held close to my heart, and as a family, we have chosen companies and organizations that we dedicate a portion of our finances to each year. When it comes to making donations, it easily feels like there are thousands of people, families, groups, organizations, and companies that are in need of our contributions. Every day as I scroll through my Facebook feed, there is tragedy, trauma and unmistakable pain. My...

The Newest Mammarazi on the Block

Dear Mojitos & Munchkins family, It is no secret that I like love strongly adore photographing my children. Where they see me, they see a mom fanatically taking photos. My mammarazi’ing has taken on different phases throughout my years. Pre-children, I could be seen proudly carrying around my Digital SLR camera, properly worn around my neck while shooting, and just-as-properly put away in its’ traveling case when I wasn’t. Child #1 came around, and I continued to document every big (and small) milestone, but eventually gave up on “properly” wearing the neck strap. After all, kids move so damn fast that...

An Open Letter to My Students: You Are Loved

TO MY IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE STUDENTS To my immigrant and refugee students, I am a better educator because I have worked with you. You have taught me that there is more to the school day than academics and checking off the standards. Through you, I have learned to respect other cultures, to embrace change and difference, and to test my own perspectives. Through you, I have learned that teaching in the real world is much different than how it was portrayed in my college textbooks. Every learner is different, that I knew. But with each learner bringing their strengths and challenges...

Dear Sunday Morning…

Once a year, I wake up as a mid-30’s, mom of three who is well rested and surrounded by absolute silence. I am covered by the sheets of a king-sized bed that I have all to myself, I can roll over and flip through non-cartooned channels for as long as I want, someone else makes me breakfast… And cleans up after me. Once a year, I take a “mental business trip” to restore my sanity, stock up on alone time, and pee in private. This tradition started off on a horribly sad and tragic note, as I began setting aside this ME DAY...

Published on Scary Mommy?? PINCH ME!!

As the calendar turned to 2017, I sat down and wrote out a few blogging goals for the new year. My blog started out as a hobby, an outlet that allowed me to write my feelings and stories out, and proved thearapeutic. I never saw it as anything more than that. Recently, I’ve taken some risks and put myself “out there” in the blogging world. That vulnerability has been well received and I have appreciated every second of it. I feel like I’m finding a niche that I’m passionate about, and thus far enjoying the journey. As I wrote out...

Can We Stop With Evening Activities Already??

Dear World, Can we all just agree that evening activities are AWFUL? I get it, my kid likes basketball…. I get it, my kid is good at gymnastics. I get it… Being on a team shapes a person and builds skills that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I still think it’s RIDICULOUS that we spend our nights carting kids around, doing kid swaps if you’re lucky enough to not fly solo, high-fiving family members court side while grabbing half your team to shuttle to the next destination, stuffing our faces with what we try to pass as “dinner” so...
